The advertisement in Hong Kong's popular Apple Daily 온라 인카지 노게 임(www.v56000.co.at.vc) newspaper showed a giant grasshopper looking down at Hong Kong's skyline with a headline demanding the local government stop the influx of pregnant women from China. The increasing number of mainland Chinese women has recently crossed the border to the Chinese Special Administrative Region to give births in order to have their children granted of rights to permanently reside in Hong Kong. The ad continued on, stating that Hong Kong residents have "tolerated enough" of mainlanders' craze for resources provided in Hong Kong. "The EOC understands the strong sentiments of Hong Kong people over certain recent social issues, including the strain on medical and other social resources caused by a major influx of external demand," said Lam Woon-kwong, chairperson of the EOC. Lam, however, called for tolerance and rationality from people in Hong Kong in facing the current social situation, saying, "Putting forward contemptuous and vilifying remarks will only heighten social tension and mutual hostility."
