Leaders of five opposition parties, including the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), civic groups and a farmers' association gathered at the National Assembly to denounce President Lee Myung-bak and his ruling Grand National Party (GNP) for ratifying the trade pact. The rally came a day after Lee signed off on a package of 14 bills related to the pact, completing all the domestic procedures necessary to implement the trade accord. Seoul and Washington hope the deal will go into effect as of Jan. 1. "The railroaded ratification of the Korea-U.S. FTA, which will benefit only the top one percent of rich people, is null and void from the beginning," they said in a joint statement. "Let's hand out a verdict on President Lee and the GNP that ignored and stamped on the people's will."
